If you choose PUC: how it actually works

Run by the Department of Pre-University Education, Karnataka · pue.karnataka.gov.in

  • PUC is two years — 1st PUC and 2nd PUC, the same as Class 11 and 12 elsewhere in India.
  • Whichever stream you take, you study four core subjects plus English and one more language. Kannada, Hindi, Urdu, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Marathi, French, German and Arabic are among the options.
  • Your SSLC marks affect which college and combination you can get — Science combinations usually have the highest cut-offs and Arts the lowest.
  • Karnataka now holds more than one attempt at the 2nd PUC board exam, with the better score counting. Confirm the current year rule on the DPUE portal before assuming it.
  • Before paying any fee, check the college appears on the official Department of Pre-University Education list of recognised colleges. Shortlist several colleges on stream, commute and cost rather than reputation alone.

If you choose Science: PCMB or PCMC?

This is the single choice students most often ask about.

PCMB

Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Biology

Keeps BOTH doors open. Biology lets you sit NEET for medicine; Maths lets you sit KCET or JEE for engineering. Choose it if you are still deciding.

PCMC

Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Computer Science

Aimed at engineering, IT, AI and data science. Without Biology you cannot sit NEET, so medicine is closed. Choose it if you are sure about technology.
