Economics asks whether a policy that sounds obviously good actually did anything.

Asking whether a striking result is real before believing it is already your habit, and you can argue the other side of a view accurately. Econometrics wants real comfort with mathematics. Any stream can take the BA, but most colleges expect Maths for the B.Sc.

In econometrics, most hours go into cleaning data and checking assumptions, then writing findings for people who will never read the equations. Development work adds field surveys; policy work means briefs short enough for a busy decision-maker to actually read.

A masters is often the next step, and most influential policy roles come through the civil services or after one, so decide what you will add. Econometric skills are exactly what the data-analysis job market is short of.
