Inside AYUSH Medicine (BAMS / BHMS / BUMS / BSMS)
6 of the specialisations you can take within this course — what each one teaches, who it suits, and what you can choose once it is done.
Ayurveda
The classical Indian system of medicine, studied as a full medical degree. Ayurveda understands health as a balance between the functional principles of the body, and treats through diet, daily regimen, herbal and mineral preparations, and purification procedures. The course teaches the classical texts in Sanskrit alongside modern anatomy, physiology and diagnosis.
What you would actually study
- Sanskrit and the classical texts, which are studied in the original
- Rachana and Kriya Sharira — anatomy and physiology in the Ayurvedic framework
- Dravyaguna — medicinal plants, their properties and their actions
- Rasashastra and Bhaishajya Kalpana — preparing medicines, including mineral preparations
- Roga Nidana — diagnosis and the classification of disease
- Kayachikitsa — internal medicine, the largest clinical subject
- Panchakarma — the purification therapies
- Swasthavritta — preventive medicine, diet and public health
What the work is like
Outpatient consultations that are longer than in conventional practice, because diet, routine and constitution are all assessed, followed by prescribing and often a course of therapy administered over days or weeks.
It suits you if
Students genuinely interested in the classical system and willing to learn Sanskrit, who are patient with slow-acting treatment, and who want to build a practice on long-term patient relationships.
The honest part
This is a full five-and-a-half year medical degree with a compulsory internship, and graduates register and practise. But what an Ayurveda graduate may prescribe, and where they may work, is governed by state rules that have been repeatedly contested in court — check the current position in your state before assuming the scope is the same as an MBBS. Many graduates build practices around chronic conditions and Panchakarma, and a good number move into the pharmaceutical or hospital administration side instead.
Finished this. What can you choose next?
- MD or MS in an Ayurveda speciality
- Your own clinic, often with a Panchakarma facility
- AYUSH medical officer through the state public service commission
- Ayurvedic pharmaceutical and herbal product companies
- Teaching in an Ayurveda college, or research through the central research council
Homoeopathy
A system of medicine based on the principle that a substance which produces certain symptoms in a healthy person can, in an extremely diluted preparation, be used to treat a patient showing those symptoms. The degree is a full medical course: it teaches homoeopathic philosophy and materia medica alongside conventional anatomy, physiology and pathology.
What you would actually study
- Organon of Medicine — the founding text and philosophy of the system
- Homoeopathic Materia Medica — the remedies and the symptom pictures attached to them
- Homoeopathic pharmacy — how remedies are prepared and potentised
- Repertory — the index used to match a set of symptoms to a remedy
- Case taking and case analysis, which is unusually detailed in this system
- Anatomy, physiology and pathology as in conventional medicine
- Practice of medicine, and the basics of surgery and obstetrics
- Community medicine and public health
What the work is like
Long consultations — a first case taking can run an hour, because the whole person and their history is recorded — followed by prescribing and review over months. Most graduates work in their own practice.
It suits you if
Students who are patient listeners and observers, who are comfortable with a system built on detailed case histories, and who are prepared to build a practice slowly on word of mouth.
The honest part
You should know before enrolling that homoeopathy is scientifically contested and that this is a settled matter in mainstream medical science, whatever your view of the clinical experience. The degree itself is a recognised five-and-a-half year course with an internship, and graduates register and practise. Enter it having thought about that honestly, not by accident because a medical seat was unavailable.
Finished this. What can you choose next?
- MD Homoeopathy in a speciality
- Your own clinic, which is the route most graduates take
- AYUSH medical officer posts in government service
- Teaching in a homoeopathic college
- Homoeopathic pharmaceutical companies, or public health AYUSH programmes
Unani
A system of medicine with Greek and Arabic origins, developed over centuries in the Indian subcontinent. It understands health through the balance of the humours and the temperament of the individual, and treats through diet, regimen, herbal and mineral drugs, and physical therapies such as cupping and massage. It is taught as a full medical degree.
What you would actually study
- Kulliyat — the fundamental principles, including the theory of temperament
- Arabic and Urdu, needed to read the classical texts
- Ilmul Advia — Unani pharmacology and the drugs used
- Tashreeh and Munafeul Aza — anatomy and physiology
- Ilaj bit Tadbeer — regimental therapy, including cupping, massage and diet
- Moalajat — internal medicine, the main clinical subject
- Jarahat and Ilmul Qabalat — surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology
- Tahaffuzi wa Samaji Tib — preventive and social medicine
What the work is like
Outpatient practice with detailed assessment of constitution and regimen, prescribing herbal formulations, and administering or supervising regimental therapies.
It suits you if
Students with a connection to the tradition or its languages, who are interested in a system built on individual constitution, and who are willing to study Arabic and Urdu as part of a medical course.
The honest part
Colleges teaching Unani are concentrated in a few states, and the classical texts are in Arabic and Urdu — students who do not read those languages find this genuinely hard, and it is the most common reason people struggle in the course. As with the other AYUSH systems, government AYUSH posts are the most predictable employment and private practice takes years to build.
Finished this. What can you choose next?
- MD Unani in a speciality
- Your own Unani clinic
- AYUSH medical officer posts in government service
- Teaching in a Unani college
- Unani pharmaceutical manufacture, or research through the central council
Siddha
One of the oldest systems of Indian medicine, developed in the Tamil tradition. It treats through herbal, mineral and metallic preparations, diet and external therapies, and diagnoses partly through examination of the pulse. Like the other AYUSH systems it is taught as a full medical degree with a compulsory internship.
What you would actually study
- Udal Thathuvam — the principles of the body and the humours
- Tamil and the classical Siddha texts
- Gunapadam — Siddha materia medica and the preparation of medicines
- Noi Naadal — diagnosis, including pulse examination
- Maruthuvam — Siddha internal medicine
- Varmam and external therapies
- Anatomy, physiology and pathology
- Obstetrics, gynaecology, paediatrics and preventive medicine
What the work is like
Clinical practice with detailed diagnosis, preparation and prescription of classical formulations, and external therapies. Most practice and most institutions are in Tamil Nadu.
It suits you if
Students from the Tamil tradition or with good Tamil, who are drawn to a system with a strong pharmaceutical and external therapy component.
The honest part
Siddha is taught almost entirely in Tamil Nadu and the course requires Tamil, so a Karnataka student would usually have to move states and study partly in another language — check this before applying, because it is the single most common reason students leave the course. Employment is concentrated in Tamil Nadu government AYUSH services and private practice there.
Finished this. What can you choose next?
- MD Siddha in a speciality
- Your own Siddha practice
- Government AYUSH medical officer posts, mainly in Tamil Nadu
- Teaching in a Siddha college
- Siddha drug manufacture and quality control, or research through the central council
Panchakarma
The purification branch of Ayurveda — a set of procedures that prepare the body with oil and heat and then clear it through controlled therapeutic measures, followed by a strict diet and routine while it recovers. It is a department inside an Ayurvedic hospital and a postgraduate speciality, not a separate degree.
What you would actually study
- The Ayurvedic principles behind purification therapy
- Poorva karma — preparatory oleation and sudation procedures
- The main procedures — vamana, virechana, basti, nasya and raktamokshana
- Patient assessment and selection, including who must not be treated
- Preparation of the medicated oils and decoctions used in therapy
- Paschat karma — the diet and regimen that follow the procedure
- Recognition and management of complications
- Panchakarma in specific conditions such as joint and skin disease
What the work is like
Supervising therapy sessions that run daily over a week or more, assessing patients before and during, and directing the therapists who carry out the procedures.
It suits you if
Ayurveda graduates who are interested in hands-on therapeutic work and in managing a course of treatment over days rather than prescribing and reviewing months later.
The honest part
This is not a course you can enter after Class 12 — it is a subject within the Ayurveda degree and a postgraduate speciality after it. It is also the most commercially successful part of Ayurveda, and the wellness-resort version has drifted a long way from the clinical version. Decide which of the two you intend to practise, because they are different jobs with different standards.
Finished this. What can you choose next?
- MD Ayurveda in Panchakarma
- Panchakarma department of an Ayurvedic hospital
- Your own Panchakarma centre
- Wellness and medical tourism practice, a large and growing market
- Teaching, therapist training and protocol development
Yoga & Naturopathy
A medical system that treats using the body and natural elements rather than drugs — yoga practice, diet and fasting, hydrotherapy, mud, sunlight, massage and manipulative therapy. It is taught as a full degree with a clinical internship, and it treats chronic lifestyle conditions more than acute illness.
What you would actually study
- Yoga philosophy and the classical texts
- Asana, pranayama, kriya and meditation — practised as well as studied
- Anatomy, physiology and pathology
- Principles of naturopathy and the natural elements used in treatment
- Diet, nutrition and fasting therapy
- Hydrotherapy, mud therapy and sun therapy
- Massage and manipulative therapy
- Yoga therapy for specific conditions, and community health
What the work is like
Clinic and centre work: assessing patients, prescribing therapy and diet, teaching and supervising yoga practice, and running residential treatment programmes.
It suits you if
Students with a genuine personal practice and an interest in prevention and lifestyle change, who are comfortable teaching and demonstrating rather than only prescribing.
The honest part
A short yoga instructor certificate and this degree are entirely different things — one is a few weeks, the other is a five-and-a-half year medical degree with a compulsory internship, and families sometimes pay for the first believing it is the second. Check exactly which qualification a college is offering. The degree route is regulated and leads to clinical practice; the certificate route leads to teaching classes.
Finished this. What can you choose next?
- Practice in a naturopathy and yoga hospital
- Your own wellness and yoga therapy centre
- Yoga therapist in a hospital integrative medicine department
- MD in yoga and naturopathy, then teaching or research
- Corporate, school and community wellness programmes
