Civil Diploma
Diploma in Civil Engineering · 3 Years
Estimation is the most commercially valuable thing a civil diploma teaches.
You would rather be outside than at a desk, or you are the neat, exact one who can picture a building while drawing it flat. Civil has room for both: surveyors and site supervisors outdoors, draughtsmen and estimators in an office.
On site your day starts early: allocating labour, chasing material, taking instrument readings, recording progress. In the office you produce and revise drawings, or measure every quantity in them to work out what a building will cost.
On a site, your authority comes from knowledge rather than your certificate; a supervisor who cannot answer a mason's question is quietly ignored. Spend your early years learning the actual trades, and expect six-day weeks, often away from home.
