History & Archaeology

Almost every career in history begins with a postgraduate degree.

Patience with incomplete evidence and an eye for detail matter, along with refusing to make the past say what you would like. Excavation suits people content outdoors and obsessive about recording; museums suit the orderly, who enjoy explaining things to a curious stranger.

Reading, and increasingly primary evidence: inscriptions, excavation reports, museum collections. Archaeology means hot, dusty excavation seasons, then long months of laboratory analysis and writing. Museum work is quieter: cataloguing objects, planning exhibitions, writing labels.

Openings are few, mostly in government institutions and universities — the Archaeological Survey of India, state departments, museums — and museum recruitment can be slow and irregular. Treat museum training as heritage-sector skill, not a queue for one post. In the civil services exams, ancient history is a substantial part of the syllabus.
