Inside Nursing

5 of the specialisations you can take within this course — what each one teaches, who it suits, and what you can choose once it is done.

01

Critical Care Nursing

Nursing the sickest patients in the hospital — people on ventilators, after major surgery, or whose organs are failing. In an intensive care unit one nurse looks after one or two patients, watches monitors continuously, and is usually the first person to notice that something has begun to go wrong.

What you would actually study

  • Applied anatomy and physiology of the critically ill patient
  • Haemodynamic monitoring — what the numbers on the monitor actually mean
  • Ventilator care and airway management
  • Cardiac monitoring, reading an electrocardiogram and recognising dangerous rhythms
  • Emergency and resuscitation protocols
  • Critical care pharmacology — infusions, drug calculations and titration
  • Infection control in intensive care, where infection is the constant threat
  • Care of the unconscious patient, and end-of-life care

What the work is like

Twelve-hour shifts of continuous observation, documentation and hands-on care, with emergencies breaking into it. It is the most technical and most physically continuous nursing there is.

It suits you if

Students who stay calm when everything is urgent, who are precise with numbers and drug calculations, and who can go on paying attention in hour eleven of a shift.

The honest part

Intensive care experience is what most improves a nursing career, both in Indian corporate hospitals and abroad, and it is also where burnout is highest — long shifts, deaths despite everything you did, and a level of vigilance that cannot lapse. Many nurses do a few years of it and move to teaching or a calmer unit. That is a normal career, not a failure.

Finished this. What can you choose next?

  • Intensive care staff nurse, then charge nurse in a tertiary hospital
  • M.Sc Nursing in medical-surgical or critical care nursing
  • Critical care certification courses recognised by hospitals
  • Overseas nursing, after registration and the required language test
  • Nurse educator, or hospital quality and infection control roles
02

Paediatric Nursing

Nursing children, from a premature newborn in an incubator to a teenager. Almost nothing carries over unchanged from adult nursing: doses are calculated by weight, equipment comes in sizes, normal readings change with age, and a sick child often cannot say what hurts.

What you would actually study

  • Growth and development, and what is normal at each age
  • Neonatal nursing — care of the newborn, including premature babies
  • Common childhood illnesses and their nursing management
  • Paediatric drug calculation by body weight
  • Immunisation and preventive child health
  • Infant and child nutrition, including feeding difficulties
  • Neonatal and paediatric intensive care
  • Communicating with children and supporting families

What the work is like

Ward and newborn unit work, feeding, monitoring, medication and a great deal of parent contact. Parents stay with the child, so you are nursing a family rather than one patient.

It suits you if

Students who are gentle and endlessly patient, who are good at distraction and play, and who can keep a frightened parent steady while working on their child.

The honest part

Doses, fluids and equipment all change with the weight of the child, so the arithmetic must be exact every single time — an adult-sized error can kill a newborn. It is emotionally heavy work, particularly in newborn intensive care. The compensation is that children recover completely, and fast, in a way that adults often do not.

Finished this. What can you choose next?

  • Newborn intensive care or paediatric ward nursing
  • M.Sc Nursing in child health nursing
  • Neonatal nursing certification, valued in large hospitals and abroad
  • Child health and immunisation programmes under the national health mission
  • Nurse educator, or overseas paediatric nursing
03

Psychiatric Nursing

Nursing people with mental illness — depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, substance dependence, and the crises that come with them. There is very little equipment involved: the work is observation, conversation, medication management and building a relationship with a patient who may not believe they are ill.

What you would actually study

  • Psychology and human behaviour
  • Classification and clinical features of mental illness
  • Psychiatric assessment and the mental status examination
  • Psychopharmacology — the medicines used and their side effects
  • Therapeutic communication and basic counselling skills
  • Crisis intervention and suicide risk assessment
  • Care of substance use disorders and de-addiction
  • Community mental health, rehabilitation and mental health law

What the work is like

Ward and outpatient work built around routine, observation and talking. Documentation is detailed because changes in behaviour over days are the main evidence of whether treatment is working.

It suits you if

Students who are emotionally steady, who listen well, and who are not frightened or offended by patients who may be aggressive, withdrawn or convinced that nothing is wrong.

The honest part

India is severely short of trained mental health nurses, so the skill is in demand, and Bengaluru holds a national mental health institute that makes Karnataka a strong place to train. The work asks for a kind of patience that other nursing does not: progress is slow, relapse is common, and you must not take either personally.

Finished this. What can you choose next?

  • Psychiatric hospital and de-addiction centre nursing
  • M.Sc Nursing in mental health nursing
  • Community mental health programmes and outreach clinics
  • Counselling and psychosocial rehabilitation roles
  • Nurse educator, or school and workplace mental health programmes
04

Community Health Nursing

Nursing outside the hospital — in primary health centres, villages, schools and homes. A community health nurse runs immunisation, antenatal care, family planning and national disease programmes, visits families, and is often the only trained health worker a village sees regularly.

What you would actually study

  • Primary health care and the structure of the Indian health system
  • Epidemiology and disease surveillance
  • Maternal and child health services, including antenatal and postnatal care
  • Family planning and reproductive health
  • Immunisation programmes and cold chain management
  • National health programmes — tuberculosis, malaria, non-communicable disease
  • Health education, counselling and community organisation
  • Environmental health, water, sanitation and home visiting

What the work is like

Field work: home visits, village clinics, school health checks, camps and a considerable amount of programme record keeping. Travel is part of the day, and the equipment is minimal.

It suits you if

Students who want to work with whole families and communities rather than one bedside at a time, who communicate easily with people of any background, and who are comfortable in rural areas.

The honest part

This is where the greater part of Indian health need actually is, and where the most stable government nursing posts are — primary health centres, national programmes and school health services. The trade-off is that it is low-technology work with a lot of paperwork, and hospital-trained nurses sometimes find it unglamorous until they see how much difference it makes.

Finished this. What can you choose next?

  • Community health officer and public health nursing posts in government service
  • M.Sc Nursing in community health nursing
  • National health mission programme and district-level roles
  • Non-government organisation and public health project work
  • A Master of Public Health, or a nurse educator post
05

Operation Theatre Nursing

Nursing inside the operating theatre. The scrub nurse works sterile beside the surgeon, anticipating and handing instruments; the circulating nurse manages everything outside the sterile field — equipment, counts, specimens and records. Together they make the operation possible and make sure nothing is left behind.

What you would actually study

  • Surgical asepsis, sterilisation and disinfection
  • Operation theatre layout, equipment and safety systems
  • Surgical instruments — identification, handling and sets for each procedure
  • The scrub and circulating nurse roles in detail
  • Anaesthesia support and safe patient positioning
  • Pre-operative preparation and post-anaesthesia recovery care
  • Surgical counts, specimen handling and documentation
  • Infection control and biomedical waste management

What the work is like

Theatre lists that run to a schedule, with long periods standing, full concentration and no interruption. Preparation before the list and cleaning and restocking after it take as long as some operations.

It suits you if

Students who like order, protocol and preparation, who work well in a tight team without needing to talk much, and who are physically able to stand for long stretches.

The honest part

Theatre nursing is precise, protocol-bound work where the same steps are done the same way every time, and surgeons rely on it absolutely. It is in strong demand in every hospital, but it takes you away from patient contact — your patients are usually asleep, and if you became a nurse for the relationship with patients you may miss it.

Finished this. What can you choose next?

  • Theatre nurse, then senior theatre in-charge
  • M.Sc Nursing in medical-surgical nursing
  • Specialised theatres — cardiac, neurosurgical, transplant or day-care surgery
  • Central sterile supply department in-charge
  • Overseas theatre nursing, or a nurse educator post
