Fitter / Welder Trade

Welder qualification tests, not your ITI marks, decide the good welding jobs.

A steady hand, the patience to hold still and concentrate, and comfort with hot, heavy physical work: that is where you start. Picture a pipe route in three dimensions easily, and fitting suits you too. Welder takes one year and admits Class 8 passes; Fitter takes two.

Fabrication yards, plants and construction sites: you cut and fit steel, tack it, weld it out, then grind and finish. Pipe work means measuring in place and fitting overhead or in a trench.

Eye and lung damage from careless welding is permanent, so wear the protective gear every time. Both trades lead on to a Mechanical diploma by lateral entry, but learn fitting and welding together first: a fitter who can weld their own joints is worth considerably more.

Who can apply
Passed SSLC / Class 10 for Fitter; the Welder trade also admits Class 8 passes. Minimum age 14.
