Motor Vehicle
Servicing and repairing cars, vans and light commercial vehicles — the whole vehicle, from the engine to the brakes to the electrical system. The trade is not only about replacing parts; it is about working out, from a noise, a warning light or a badly described complaint, what has actually gone wrong.
What you would actually study
- Workshop safety and the use of hand tools, jacks, stands, lifts and measuring instruments
- Engines — petrol and diesel, dismantling, measuring wear, reassembling and setting timing
- Fuel and ignition systems — carburettor and injection systems, and engine management
- Transmission — clutch, gearbox, propeller shaft, differential and axles
- Brakes, steering and suspension — overhaul, adjustment and safety checks
- Automotive electrical — battery, starter, alternator, lighting and wiring circuits
- Diagnostics — using a scan tool and fault codes alongside your own observation
- Servicing schedules, wheel alignment and balancing, and road testing
What the work is like
Under and inside vehicles in a workshop, on your feet all day, with dirty hands and a service advisor pushing for the next job. Dealership work is structured and repetitive; an independent garage is more varied and more improvised.
It suits you if
People who are naturally curious about how a vehicle works, who are systematic in fault-finding rather than replacing parts hopefully, and who do not mind the physical grind of the work.
The honest part
The first year or two is mostly washing, oil changes and the jobs nobody else wants, which is how apprenticeship in this trade has always worked — the ones who watch and ask become mechanics, the ones who resent it stay helpers. The other honest point is that vehicles are becoming electronic and electric faster than most workshops are: the mechanic who can read a wiring diagram and use a scan tool is already worth more than one who only knows spanners, and that gap is widening.

Diesel Mechanic
Working on diesel engines — the engines in lorries, buses, tractors, generators, excavators and pumpsets. A diesel engine has no spark plug: it ignites fuel by compressing air until it is hot enough, which makes the fuel injection system the heart of the engine and the centre of this trade.
What you would actually study
- Diesel engine construction and working — cylinder, piston, valves, and the cycle under compression ignition
- Fuel injection — injection pumps and injectors, testing and calibrating them, and modern common-rail systems
- Engine overhaul — dismantling, measuring wear against limits, reboring and reassembly
- Valve timing, injection timing and tappet setting
- Cooling and lubrication systems and the faults that develop in them
- Turbochargers, air filtration, exhaust and emission control
- Fault diagnosis — starting trouble, smoke, low power and knocking traced back to a cause
- Generating sets and stationary engines, which many of these engines drive
What the work is like
Heavy vehicle workshops, transport depots, generator service and farm and earthmoving equipment. Heavier and dirtier than car work, and sometimes done at the roadside or in a field where the machine has stopped.
It suits you if
People who are physically strong and methodical, who are not put off by heavy dirty components, and who like engines enough to want to understand them rather than only replace parts.
The honest part
This work is genuinely heavy, the components are large, and diesel and oil get into everything and stay there. The compensation is that diesel skill is needed wherever there are lorries, generators, tractors and construction machines, which is everywhere — including small towns that car dealerships never reach. Modern common-rail systems demand diagnostic equipment and a cleanliness discipline older mechanics never needed, so treat that as the part of the trade worth investing in.

Auto Electrical
The electrical and electronic half of a vehicle — the battery, the starting and charging systems, the lights, the wiring harness, and the sensors and control units that now run the engine and almost everything else. As vehicles have become more electronic, this has moved from a sideline of the mechanic trade into a specialisation of its own.
What you would actually study
- Batteries — construction, testing, charging and maintenance
- Starting system — starter motor construction, testing and overhaul
- Charging system — alternator and regulator, and diagnosing an undercharging fault
- Lighting, indicators, horns and accessory circuits, with fuses and relays
- Reading vehicle wiring diagrams and tracing a circuit through a harness
- Sensors, actuators and the engine control unit — what they measure and how they fail
- Diagnostics — scan tools and fault codes, and measuring signals with a meter and an oscilloscope
- Instrument clusters, air-conditioning controls and body electrical systems
What the work is like
Bench and vehicle work in a workshop, much of it with a meter in hand chasing a circuit that fails only sometimes. Intermittent electrical faults are the hardest work in a garage, and the reason this specialist is valued.
It suits you if
People who are patient and logical, who can follow a wiring diagram without losing their place, and who prefer careful diagnosis to heavy physical work.
The honest part
Auto electrical is where vehicle repair is heading and it is still under-supplied — most workshops have several mechanics and one person everyone calls when something electrical goes wrong, and that person can largely name their terms. Getting there needs test equipment and the discipline to measure rather than guess, and guessing is expensive because electronic parts cost a lot and are rarely returnable. Electric vehicles extend this trade rather than replacing it, but high-voltage work needs separate formal safety training and must not be improvised.

EV Servicing
Servicing electric vehicles — two-wheelers, three-wheelers, cars and buses that run on a battery pack and an electric motor instead of an engine. There is no oil to change and no gearbox to overhaul, but there is a high-voltage system that can kill you if it is handled carelessly, and a battery and controller that need an entirely different kind of diagnosis.
What you would actually study
- High-voltage safety — isolation, protective equipment, insulated tools, and the procedure for making a vehicle safe before any work begins
- Electric vehicle layout — battery pack, motor, controller, charger and the low-voltage systems alongside them
- Batteries — lithium-ion cells and packs, the battery management system, and safe handling, storage and transport
- Motors and controllers — how they are driven and how their faults present
- Charging — alternating and direct current charging, connectors, and charger installation and faults
- Regenerative braking, and the conventional brake, steering and suspension systems the vehicle still has
- Diagnostics — reading the vehicle and battery management system, and insulation resistance testing
- Wiring, connectors and cable routing for high-voltage circuits
What the work is like
Service centres and dealerships for electric vehicles, and increasingly independent workshops. Cleaner than conventional vehicle work and far more diagnostic than mechanical, with strict procedure around anything at high voltage.
It suits you if
People who are careful and procedure-following, comfortable with electrical and electronic work, and willing to be early in a field where the settled answers do not exist yet.
The honest part
Two things people get wrong here. First, this is not a trade you can pick up informally: the voltages are lethal and damaged battery packs can burn violently, so formal training and the right equipment are not optional extras. Second, do not treat it as a replacement for conventional vehicle knowledge — brakes, steering, suspension and bodywork are unchanged, and the most employable person is a good mechanic who has added high-voltage competence. Electric vehicles on Indian roads have grown quickly while trained servicing capacity has not, and that gap is the opportunity.
