At your first newsroom interview, the portfolio is the interview.

Curious to the point of nosiness, you write in plain, clear sentences and can take heavy editing without taking it personally. Fluency in Kannada as well as English is a serious advantage in Karnataka.

Reporting means calling people who do not want to talk, checking a claim against a second source and filing to a deadline that does not move, with more time out of the office than students expect. Broadcast runs on shifts, nights included; digital means publishing several times a day and correcting in public.

Most mass communication graduates end up in public relations and communications, a service job where your judgement is often overruled. If you want to report, get published while still a student. Print is shrinking, but people stay because the work matters to them.
