Sanitary Installation
Fitting out bathrooms, kitchens and toilets — the pans, cisterns, basins, sinks, taps and showers people use every day, and the traps and waste pipes that carry the dirty water away without letting smell back into the room. It is the most visible part of plumbing and the part a customer judges you on.
What you would actually study
- Sanitary fittings — types of water closet, wash basin, sink and shower, and how each is fixed and sealed
- Setting out — marking positions and heights so fittings are level, aligned and comfortable to use
- Traps, waste pipes, floor traps and gullies, and why a water seal stops smell
- Soil, waste and vent pipe systems within a building
- Fixing to masonry — chasing, drilling, plugging and making good afterwards
- Slopes and gradients, because drainage works by gravity and a wrong fall causes blockage
- Testing for leaks and flow before handing the work over
- Reading plumbing layouts and estimating the material a bathroom needs
What the work is like
Inside buildings under construction or renovation, working around tilers, electricians and painters and often after them. Kneeling, working in confined corners, and dealing with customers who care intensely about how the finished work looks.
It suits you if
People who are neat, patient with finishing work, and good with customers — sanitary work is done inside somebody's home, and how you behave there decides whether you are called again.
The honest part
Plumbing carries a social stigma that the earnings do not support: skilled plumbers in cities are genuinely hard to find, and most of them work for themselves rather than for a wage. The trade also has a real unpleasant side, because drainage work is exactly what you imagine, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. What separates people is finish quality and reliability — turning up when you said you would is, honestly, half the business.

Pipeline Fitting
The pipework behind the fittings — the water supply lines, risers and mains that run through a building or across a site, and the drainage lines that leave it. This is the part of plumbing buried in walls, trenches and shafts, where a mistake is expensive to reach once the building is finished.
What you would actually study
- Pipe materials — galvanised iron, plastic pipe of several kinds, copper and cast iron, and where each belongs
- Cutting, threading and bending pipe, and selecting the right fittings
- Jointing methods — threaded, solvent-cement, compression, push-fit and heat fusion
- Laying out a run from a drawing, with correct supports, clamps and gradient
- Valves — their types, positions and installation
- Trenching and laying underground lines, and protecting them from damage
- Pressure testing and leak detection before anything is concealed
- Estimating pipe and fitting quantities for a job
What the work is like
Site work in step with the building trades — first fix before walls are closed, second fix afterwards. Trenches, shafts, terraces and ceilings, in all weather, with heavy material to carry to where it is needed.
It suits you if
People who plan before they cut, who can hold a route in their head in three dimensions, and who are physically up to the material and the conditions.
The honest part
Concealed pipework is the definition of work you must get right the first time: a joint that weeps behind a finished wall costs the customer a wall and costs you your reputation. That responsibility is also why experienced pipeline fitters are trusted with whole buildings. Plastic pipe systems have changed the trade considerably in a decade and each system has its own jointing method, so keep learning the new ones instead of sticking to what you were first taught.

Water Management
Making sure a building or a site gets the water it needs and wastes as little as possible — where the water comes from, how it is stored and pumped, how rainwater is captured instead of being lost, and how leaks and waste are found and stopped. In a state where water is uncertain, this is the part of plumbing becoming most valuable.
What you would actually study
- Sources of supply and how a building is fed — mains, borewell, tanker and sump
- Storage and distribution — sumps, overhead tanks, risers and pressure
- Pumps — types, installation, controls and the faults that recur
- Rainwater harvesting — catchment, filtration, recharge pits and storage
- Water-saving fittings and low-flow devices
- Leak detection and repair, and reading a meter to trace unexplained consumption
- Basic water quality, and simple filtration and treatment
- Estimating demand and sizing tanks and lines for a building
What the work is like
A mix of installation and survey — inspecting existing plumbing, finding where water is being lost, installing pumps and harvesting systems, and maintaining them afterwards. Roof, sump and terrace work, and a fair amount of explaining things to owners.
It suits you if
People who like solving a problem rather than repeating a task, who can explain a recommendation clearly to a customer, and who are interested in water as a subject and not only as a job.
The honest part
This is the part of plumbing with the most room to become something more than day labour, because building owners and apartment associations will pay for a system that cuts a water bill or ends a dependence on tankers — but it needs you to survey, advise and quote, not only to fit. That means learning to talk to a committee and write a proposal, which no ITI teaches. Rainwater harvesting is required for many buildings in Bengaluru and a great number of installed systems do not actually work, which is itself a body of repair work waiting.

Firefighting Systems
The pipework that puts out a fire in a building — the wet risers, hydrants, hose reels and sprinkler lines that sit full of water under pressure until the day they are needed. It is plumbing with far higher stakes and much stricter rules, because the system has to work the first time, years after it was installed.
What you would actually study
- Heavy-gauge pipe work — cutting, threading and fabricating steel pipe, which these systems are built from
- Flanged and welded joints, and their use on pressurised lines
- Pipe supports, hangers and routing a run through a building
- Valves, hydrants and hose reels, and how each is installed
- Pumps and pressurised water systems, and the tanks that feed them
- Pressure testing and leak testing of a completed installation
- Site safety and working at height, since most of this pipework runs at ceiling level
What the work is like
Installation on construction projects — largely overhead work in basements, car parks, corridors and shafts, followed by testing and commissioning with the consultant and the inspecting authority. Later, periodic testing and maintenance of systems already in place.
It suits you if
People who are exact, who follow a drawing without improvising, and who understand that this is safety equipment — the seriousness of the work is the whole point of it.
The honest part
Be clear that a general plumber is not automatically a fire-protection installer: these systems are designed and certified against fire safety codes, the installation must follow the approved drawing and be signed off, and you enter this field through a specialist contractor and formal training rather than by declaring yourself competent. The upside is that fire systems are compulsory in high-rise and commercial buildings, which makes the work steady, and maintenance contracts continue long after construction finishes. Much of the installation is overhead work from ladders and scaffolds, which is tiring and needs proper fall protection.
