UPSC and state commissions such as KPSC recruit the officers who run public schemes.

Whether something worked interests you more than whether it sounded good, and you can question a claim without brushing it aside. You want work that touches people directly and stay patient with limited money and unlimited demands.

Reading evidence and writing briefs, then reviewing how a programme is really running: targets, funds, beneficiary lists, field inspections. Close to the ground it means meetings of elected members, tenders and service complaints, at the level where a citizen can walk in and ask you personally.

Graduates of any subject can sit the UPSC or KPSC exam, so this degree improves how well you do the job rather than your chance of getting it. Outside government the policy sector is small and generally expects a masters, so build numbers and writing.
